Better late than never, Dy-ffd made it of the paint board. Never again will I offer to paint an orange dog! . Believe it or not it took around 15 layers of paint to build up enough depth of colour to pass the shade test. So Andy I really hope you like him!

However I have been dabbling with shaker box making . This is my first attempt. My next project is to make a set and finish them with traditional milk paints.

You remember that last year my lovely Doc gave me a right royal rollicking about my cholesterol. Personally I blame it on the french Jam and the accompanying butter. Toast preference aside, I set out on a healthier breakfast plan. Quaker oats breakfast of champions, so now my cholesterol is well and truly down. Which in theory should be good, right. Wrong, because I developed a taste for it swimming in Grade 1 maple syrup. I just hope she won't check my blood sugars!

So I ask, why does French Jam taste so good. For one as a Brit I note that its made with real sugar and not not corn syrup. May be it's because the fruit isn't grown in a poly tunnel. Maybe its all that lovely moderate heat that really ripens the berries down there in provence.

I don't know but you take the lid of that Jar and the smell of fruit just ooozes's out.

Do you know hard it is to find glass sauce bottles in the US. Everything seems to be stuck in plastic these days. I was in a fish restaurant and spotted the lovely glass bottle on the table.I asked if I could possibly buy a bottle the manager just laughed. As I was leaving she appeared with a little go box. Inside a lovely glass bottle of HP ketchup. It really is the small things in life.

Simply Pearls

Firstly thanks for the nice comments about my dog painting!

I painted these pearls last year awkward little monkeys as they are so small. My mother spotted them on my blog and angled for a second rendition for her birthday. These are painted on primed gesso board. An interesting surface, its like painting on a skating rink!.

Dog Mug Days

I love this old mug it came from Sainsbury's in the UK. It was actually a present for my hubby but somehow it has navigated it's self into my mug section. Usually accompanied by a morning complaint by the afore mentioned in the tone of " Hey where's my mug". Nothing better than a bit of British china and a good cup of tea to get the day of to a good start!

Well this is a little in-depth study of an earlier painting I have been working with some new glazing techniques and paint. If I am honest I cant see a lot of difference for all the extra effort.

I am working on a large landscape for my sis at the moment. The colours are not my usual palette and all of them are transparent. Which means a glazed overlay technique. In the interest of politeness lets just say I'm a tad frustrated. I think it's the rare occasion that a piece is destined for the dustbin!

Must read my quotes from the Dali Larma I wonder if he has something to say regarding painting tantrums..

'Balance'

My husband quips what on earth is that painting about. I say, its like life. It sometimes just feels like your trying to balance a cherry on a sauce bottle. In the end I gave up explaining. It reminded me of the scene in Notting Hill where Hugh Grant and Anna Scott are discussing 'la Mariee' by Chagall . She says of the painting 'it feels how feeling in love should feel' . His response " a floating goat playing a violin" . Her response " Yes happiness wouldn't be happiness without a guitar playing goat" . So there for me, life, sometimes like a cherry on a sauce bottle

A taste Of Summer

There is something about summer in California.

Its that heady smell of strawberries on a hot day when I drive with the windows down. Acre upon acre of lush ripe berries. What could be more decadent than to be fed one on a spoon.

The choice of back ground color is unusual for me it reminds me of a a vibrant sun set. Those rich lilac hues that often fill the sky. Any way I really like this one which probably means no one else will!

"The Art of Racing in the Rain". Absolutely nothing to do with painting but perhaps the most heart warming thought provoking book I have read in a very long time. Biased, as I'm a dog lover.It tells the story of family life through the eyes of a dog named Enzo. His remaining hours on this earth are numbered. A racing theme steers us through the book, via Denny, Enzo's master a would be rally driver. Its parallels to life and modern living stopped me in my tracks. Worth every single penny of the $13.49 I paid at Costco. I can't recommend this short novel enough.

I really was in the mood for some humor with this painting. I needed humor after a 3 day stint of house hunting. The idea for this painting came from a 12 flight from New Zealand during which I happened to be sitting behind a five year old boy who literally blew bubbles for a 10 hour duration. He was such a happy chap blowing and popping bubbles to his hearts content.

I can't see this box in a store without smiling. In the end I gave in and bought a box. My husband and I sat in the kitchen like two children chewing gum and reading the jokes. Its the small things in life that really do keep you laughing

A Slice of Summer

I laughed so hard on Sunday . My husband had been on a trip to view some pertroglyps and had driven home through the orange growing area of Santa Paula. He arrived with 70 grapefruits and a commercial case load of oranges. Absolutely every fruit bowl is full and the kitchen has a distinctly citrus glow

I just couldn't get going this morning . Eight o'clock and I'm just sitting staring at my easel.

So rather than just sit there all morning I did what I've been promising myself I would do for a good few weeks. Go and get some reference pictures for a painting. Must admit I have never seen a life guard hut this color their normally that washed out CA blue. But this one, its electric. Currently I am thinking this will be large scale and in oil.

I am not sure why this painting amuses me so much. May be its a british thing. I got the idea for this whilst we were In NZ . I am pretty awful on ferries and during the "jaunt" from the north to the south Isle I had to focus on something other than my stomach. It was so choppy all I could do was fix my glare on my foot! . I was in fact wearing my little pink holiday sneaks.

Its odd sometimes I can stare at things for ever deciding what color they really are.I first this jar looked black then eventually I realised it was actually nearly purple!

For some reason I have become fixated on trio's so two more to follow. This little yellow lollipop is sitting in its wrapper. I love how the plastic wrapper pick up and intensifies the color beneath. The side lighting bounces some vibrant highlights on right.

Mrs woods if you read this, this ones for you... After your comments about HDL to LDL ratios,

I decided all was well with the world and ate a whole bar of Nestle's crunch and after week's without chocolate it was heaven. I will also be following your expert recommendations and protecting my cardiovascular system with a good glass of red wine.

On the painting front this was interesting with regard to the shadows it took me a while to really grasp how the shadows transitioned from brown to blue grey under the chocolate bar

Not For Sale

I sold the original of this painting last week. My other half was pretty disappointed he's a keen scrabble player and had grown attached to it. So I painted a copy for home, the colors are stronger but the sentiment remains the same.

On a lighter note the weather in Sunny CA has been hideous, wetter than Wigan, I trooped out this morning clad in long green
wellington boots armed with a four foot golfing umbrella. Nothing better than a bit of puddle jumping even at my age!

I have just started a new class which is taking up two day a week. I am finding it really interesting as I tend to paint
small and usually bright. This is limited palette large scale still life. So painting huge jugs and bowls in earth tones is very stretching for me. I am currently working on some mock ups so watch this space for my new darker side.

As an antidote I painted this small red lollipop, but notice those dark earthy shadows under the plastic...

I painted this today simply because I was grumpy. I had my blood results back on Friday and my cholesterol is sky high.
Consequently I have put on a low fat low sugar diet. What do I do with a whole draw of sweets!.

On the painting front well, it is nearly Valentines day! . These are british love hearts they are about the size of a quarter they have been making these in the north of England since the thirties. I am pretty sure they still use the same machine.

Gosh i struggled with the lettering on this one - may be i need new glasses or a ruler. My other half left today for a class with with the Horological Society in the UK so my paint time is my own for 7 whole days.

This was lovely to paint - I was pleased with the jelly beans and some what annoyed with the bag!
Any way I got to eat them when i'd finished.

Have been swamped with visitors for the last to and a half weeks so have slipped some what with the painting.
My sister has asked me to paint a series painted on white - she wants to photograph them and mount for her kitchen
so watch this space for Sara's on White series.

Ah - More free parking I hadn't realised that there was such a difference in the colors of the board games even the car
is different on the US board. Any way this was some fun light hearted painting. I had forgotten how difficult it is to get
lines straight...

There is much humor in this for me, having lived out side of London for many years. I always smile when I play monopoly at the
concept of free parking. Personally I don't think there has been any free parking since around 1970. Perhaps it needs an update!

I painted this simple piece yesterday it was probably all the board games over Thanks Giving that made me think of this.
